GEM: Contemporary Jewellery & Gemstones from Afghanistan

GEM: Contemporary Jewellery & Gemstones from Afghanistan - an exhibition Melanie was asked to curate for the British Council and which was on show at its London headquarters in the autumn of 2013 is touring to Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh, opening on 2 October 2014. The result of collaboration with Turquoise Mountain, an Afghanistan-based organisation, which promotes Afghan craft and design worldwide, the exhibition showcased specially commissioned jewellery created by Turquoise Mountain artisans alongside pieces of contemporary jewellery design by UK designers including Pippa Small, Hattie Rickards, Vicki Sarge and Melanie Eddy. Exhibition design by Will Shannon.

Here is what Dovecot has to say about hosting GEM: Dovecot Studios is a leading contemporary fine art tapestry studio, with works commissioned for major public, corporate and academic institutions worldwide. Dovecot’s Master Weavers work to commission, producing tapestry and tufted rugs, working with world renowned artists to create tapestries for private and public collectors. Dovecot remains unique in its highly creative collaboration between artist, weavers and commissioners. The rich pieces which result from fruitful collaboration between artists and designers, working with skilful artist crafts men and women, links the work of Dovecot to the projects which feature in GEM. The international ambition which inspires the work of Turquoise Mountain and the crafts it supports resonates strongly with our own, and we welcome this exquisite exhibition into Dovecot’s gallery in the heart of Edinburgh.
